God Exists Outside of Time, Space, and Matter: What That Really Means

When we talk about God, we often picture Him through the lens of human experience. We think in hours, in places, in physical things we can see and touch. But God is not like us. He is the Creator of all things, including the very structure of reality—time, space, and matter. These three define our universe, but they do not define God. He existed before any of them were made. He is not limited by what He created.

Let’s start with time. In Genesis chapter 1 verse 1, it says, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." The phrase "in the beginning" points to time. It had a starting point. Time began when God created the universe. But God Himself has no beginning. Psalm chapter 90 verse 2 says, "Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God." God was already alive before time began. He was not born. He does not age. He does not move through time like we do. He created time, and He sees the past, present, and future all at once. That means He is completely outside of it.

Now think about space. The heavens in Genesis 1:1 refer to the vast space of the universe. But before God made the heavens, He existed. God is not located somewhere within the universe like we are. He fills all of creation, yet He is not confined by it. In Jeremiah chapter 23 verse 24, God says, "Do I not fill heaven and earth?" He is everywhere at once. There is no place where He is not. But even more amazing, He was already alive when there was no space at all—no stars, no sky, no dimension. That means God is not contained by space. He is above it, beyond it, and not limited by location.

Then comes matter—the physical things we can touch, see, and measure. Matter includes the earth, planets, atoms, and everything made of substance. But God is Spirit, as Jesus said in John chapter 4 verse 24. He is not made of particles or chemicals. He existed before any physical object was created. He did not come from matter—matter came from Him. Hebrews chapter 11 verse 3 says, "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." In other words, God made the physical world from nothing. He Himself is not physical. He is Spirit, invisible, and eternal.

So what does this all mean? It means God is far beyond our understanding. He is not trapped in time, boxed in by space, or made of matter. He is above all of it. And yet, He chose to step into it. Through Jesus Christ, the eternal God entered into time, walked in space, and took on human flesh. He did not do this because He had to. He did it because He loves us. And one day, when time ends, space fades, and matter burns away, God will still be. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the One who was, who is, and who is to come.
